Take the last days in your old home to get some more organizing done. You’ll have quite the work cut out for you once you have moved so try your best to lighten the burden beforehand.
One of the main things that people stress about when it comes to moving is their valuables and important documents. Misplacing things can be rather easy when you’ve got boxes piled on top of boxes and you’re constantly in packing mode. Take the time out to purchase a folder where you’ll file all your important documents. Passports can easily and safely be stored in a plastic paper sleeve secured with paper clips. For other important documents that you can’t afford to have developed crease lines, store them in a plastic paper sleeve as well. Put these in your folder and put it in a safe place that you’ll easily remember.
Your valuables can be stored in a box. If there are glass items or items that are easily scratched amongst them, be sure to wrap them safely as to avoid any damage. Tape the box securely and store in the same location as your important documents folder. Transport these items in your car, and once you arrive at your new home, ensure that these are the first things that you remove from the car. Find a safe place in your new home fto store them.
If you have drilled or nailed anything into the walls of your old home and are required to fill them before you return the keys to your landlord, be sure to patch them up. Not doing so may cause you to have money taken out of your security deposit. Fixing up patches is both easy and inexpensive and if your landlord was to charge you for not completing the task yourself, you may be looking at paying a substantial amount more than you would have, had you done it yourself.
You will also want to pack a bag filled with essentials. If you have small children, this may mean packing diapers, pacifiers, wipes, bottles, toys and formula. You’ll also want to ensure that this bag contains all the things that you may need on the first night in your new home.
Another thing that you will need to take care of before you hand over the keys to your landlord, is cleaning. This goes for your old home as well as your new one. A couple days before your move, you should take a trip to your new Residence and get some light cleaning done in order to rid the home of any dust that has accumulated for the period of time that there was no one inhabiting it. You’ll also want to open the windows of each room, and allow the place to air out especially if it had been recently painted. Once all the boxes are out of your own home, have your vacuum cleaner ready to get rid of dust and dirt that may have been hiding under the sofa.
Check each room if you have left any items behind once all the boxes and furniture have been moved out. You should also take this time to close any windows in the house, as well as ensure that all the doors are locked. Empty out the mailbox one last time.
